Just after Christmas 1976 when I was 19 and Gordon was only 28, I left Newmarket to go and work in Sicily. Total disaster, and I ended up within a couple of days with no money and no means to get back home. Luckily, my mum was still staying in Newmarket because we had no phone, so I called and spoke to Gordon. He was amazing. He found the number of the Home Office and called them more than once, bearing in mind it was Christmas holidays. He insisted they get hold of the consulate in Palermo and that they give me money to get home, which they don't normally do. They all did as he asked. Not many people his age would have been able to do as he did. When I arrived in London 2 days later, by train,(the planes in Sicily were on strike), Gordon was there to meet me. He just gave me a big hug and said "Thank God you're safe, we were so worried." He was like my big brother, and I knew he had my back, and he always did.
